Listing an Item -
Review the Fee Schedule to know what charges are accrued for listing items using the different types of auctions and auction enhancements.

   1. List your item by clicking the Add an Auction link in the top menu.

   2. Select the type of auction you want to use to list your item, Standard, Fixed Price or Dollar.

   3. Enter your book information (author, title, etc.).  Some of this will be auto inserted into your auction headline.  You can add to or edit this inserted information to create whatever headline you want, see below.
 4. Select the correct options for your item's Identifier Fields (optional).

By using these options, you will increase your items chances of being returned in a buyer's search results.  Many people exclude all "Undeclared" items from their searches.

Binding: If your item is an ex-library or book club item, you must choose that option above all others.  Buyers who don't want these items don't want to see them in their search results and they aren't going to buy yours anyway. Mis-described items will be removed (there is a report item button on every listing where users can notify the administrator of mis-described items.  Sellers will receive a polite notice that their listing is in error, and depending on the problem, the item may be corrected by the admin, the seller may be given a reasonable amount of time to correct (or dispute) the problem, or the item may be closed by the admin until the seller makes the appropriate changes.  Sellers will not know who reported the item.  Users who submit frivolous or harassing reports will be sanctioned or blocked from the site.

Reading Level:  Not an exact science, but take your best shot.  Most searchers will narrow their desired results to a range of options (K+ to 2nd and 3rd to 6th, for example).

Book and Dust Jacket Condition:  Use our Grading guidelines to decide which options to choose.

Tip: Avoid the temptation to over grade or to neglect to mention a defect. Think of your buyers reaction when they open your package: You don't want to disappoint them. Your feedback reputation is the often the key to buyer confidence and can make a big difference in how many buyers bid on your items.

 5. Choose a category

This is one of the most important steps when listing an item, because our detailed, nested* category system allows buyers to browse for items by subject, much like they would shop for them in a store.

Tip: Use your browser's 'Search on this Page' function (CTRL-F) on our descriptive Category list page to match many common keywords to the best category for your item.  Or click here to see our easy-view outline format category list which includes the the number of current auctions in each category.

*Nested categories allow sellers to put their items in the lowest sub-categories and yet have them appear in the parent categories above it, so put your item in the most specific sub-category as possible to get the most exposure. (if you put your item in Fiction: Animal Stories: Horse Stories, your item will appear whether a buyer is browsing the Horse Stories, Animal Stories, or Fiction categories).

 6. Enter the Auction Headline

This can be up to 250 characters long and should include as much of the title, author, and any keywords as possible.  The default search is 'headline only' so the more info you can put in the headline, the more searches you will match.

   7. Enter your books Description.
  • Use HTML to enhance your description's appearance.
  • Describe the book in detail and note the defects.
Include the storyline, a synopsis, or even a personal review if you want (you've got the buyer this far, this is the place to close the sale).
    • Tip:  Copy blurbs from the back cover or the dust jacket flaps.
  • Ex-Library and Bookclub editions should ALWAYS be noted, even though they are also designated in the Binding/Media field below.
  • Include information about you and your bookstore or website.
  • Include your Shipping and Payment details
    • Tip 1: Make these extra clear.  Some buyers won't email to ask and then don't bid
    • Tip 2: Make you U.S. shipment a fixed amount so the buyer can send payment immediately if they want.  You can enter this fixed shipping amount on the listing form and buyers will see your shipping charge posted next to your current bid so they know what the total price will be.
If you forget something in the description, you can add to your items description using the Edit function on your My Auctions Page.

 8. Set the Opening Bid

This is the lowest acceptable price you will take for your item (unless you use a reserve price or you use the price drop feature below).

Tip: Start your item as low as possible to attract bids.  Items with bidding activity, even just one bid get more "eyeballs" and often bring higher prices when buyers get into a bidding war over what they first decided was a bargain, but now they don't want to let get away.

 9. Set a Reserve or Purchase Now price.

10. Set the time your auction ends (optional, no charge).

  11. Check the appropriate boxes for your accepted Shipping and Payment Options.

The system will set a "cookie" on your computer to remember your last selections so you don't have to reselect them the next time unless you want to offer different options.

12. Give your item a Seller Reference number or catalog name (optional, no charge).

13. Choose the Gallery option to have your item's thumbnail image displayed in the Gallery View and to have the thumbnail image displayed on the auction listing line next to your auction title.  There is no charge for adding the gallery option and it is highly recommended that you use this option to take advantage of our visual browsing format with the extra large thumbnails (Note: you must upload an image to use the gallery option, thumbnails are only generated when an image is uploaded through our system.  You can add images to your auctions at any time by using the Edit function).

14. Increase interest in your item by using the Auction Enhancement options: Bold, Highlight, and Featured (optional).

15. Add digital photos to enhance your auction description.

Pictures saved on your computer can be quickly uploaded to our servers (image upload are free, you can have up to six per auction) directly from the Add an Auction pages OR you can enter the URL (web site address) for photos hosted elsewhere on the Web (no charge, but you cannot use the gallery option with non-site hosted images).  For detailed instructions on adding images, click here.

16. Once you have entered all the information about your item,  you will be presented with a preview screen where you can review all of the information you have entered and options you have chosen. Use the Back button to go back and make any necessary changes.

Do not press the Finish button until you are absolutely sure that all of the information is correct.

17. When you press the Finish button, your account will be listed immediately and your account will be charged with the applicable charges.

Note: You can end an auction at any time in your My Auctions pages by using the Close button next to the listing.  Any bids for that item will still be valid and you will be charged the appropriate final value fee.  Manually closing an auction will end all automatic relists for that auction.

Once you press the Finish button you will be presented with a link to where you can view your auction, and a receipt for what you have been charged for adding the auction.  You can print out this receipt as a record of your transaction.

Bulk Uploading your records.
You can bulk upload your existing inventory records by exporting them in a CSV (comma separated value) file, a Homebase file, a BookTrakker file, a UIEE format file, or a custom format file.  For detailed instructions, click here.  We are adding more bulk upload options in the near future.
Your Account Status and Billing
1. You can check the status of any debits or credits that have been charged to your account by clicking on the My Account link above the top menu.

2. Log into your account using your username and password,  and then choose a billing period for which to view your bill.  All transactions for your chosen billing period will tell you what the debit (Listing Fee, Closing Fee) or credit (Registration Credit, Volume Discount) was for, how much it was, and the date that it was processed.

3. You account will be billed on a monthly basis.  Past due accounts are subject to finance charges.
